Full Description
Second World War public air raid shelter extemporised from a nineteenth century tunnel running east-west under Clarendon Road, Gravesend. The tunnel was about 10m long, constructed of brick, and with a semi-circular arch. The tunnel was originally a route through to either part of the terrace Gardens which once existed on both sides of Clarendon Road. The tunnel was adapted in about 1939 and protective blast walls were added at either end in 1940. It would have been decommissioned in 1945 and still exists under the road, with the end openings permanently blocked.
