TR009625: Windmill, standing on the east side of the Faversham Oare road. A tower mill with no cap, but an octangle pitched roof, converted to a dwelling house, The spur wheel exists in the ceiling of one of the upper rooms. It dates from c.1900. (1) TR 0062: Oare Windmills. Early 19thc. Tower type. Red brick. Hooded cap of tarred weather-boarding. Sweeps and fantail missing. Grade 2 (2) TR 009 625: Oare mill, a tower mill dating from c 1878, stands on private ground behind the Windmill Public house. It was once a very fine five storeyed mill equipped with powerful machinery driving four pairs of 8 stones. It was one of the few mills to work under Goverment orders during World War 1. Today it stands without sweeps or fantail, its top covered by a curious tiled roof. However the tower remains in good condition and is used as a private residence. (See Illustration card for photo.) (3) The five-storeyed mill near Oare is one of the last six tower mills to remain in kent. Since conversion from dereliction in 1963 it has again become an outstanding feature of the vicinty. The exact date of the mills construction is not certain, but it would appear to have been at the end of the eighteenth or in the early nineteenth century; it was not included in Hasted's survey for maps published between 1778 and 1801, but is depicated on Greenwoods map of 1821. (4) The octagonal mansard roof was erected in the 1960s on the derelict mill's conversion to a dwelling, with an outer covering of cedar shingles. Recorded by NRIM. (5)
