Full Description
Second World War use by the Royal Navy of the magazines of New Tavern Fort, Milton Place, Gravesend. This may have incorporated bot the larger 1872 brick tunnels and the separate 1904 magazines. They were requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1941 and designated as sleeping quarters for the personnel of HMS Gordon, a shore establishment utilising the adjacent (and no longer existing) Sea School and in 1975 many bunk beds of a naval type were discovered in one of the tunnels. Shelter use would have been discontinued by 1945. The tunnels are accessible as part of the New Tavern Fort heritage site.
