Full Description
Underground Second World War garden air raid shelter on the north side of the 1920s No. 6 Springhead Road, Northfleet. It is accessed from a later-rendered brick entrance canopy, from which steps decscend to a right-angled turn into the shelter room. The latter is about 2.3 m long and 1.5 m wide, having yellow-brick walls and a 2m high ceiling formed of pre-cast roof sections. The room is otherwise featureless and there is no emergency exit. From scar evidence, the top and bottom of the entrance steps had been provided with doors. There is a small rainwater sump at the foot of the steps. The top of the roof is flush with the external surface of the garden. The shelter is thought to have been built by, or for, the occupiers of the house in 1939. It would have been discontinued for air raid precautions purposes in 1945.
