Monument record TR 23 NE 214 - Hougham Battery

Summary

This battery was built in 1942 for three 8 inch guns as part of Britains coast defences. The battery is now buried under channel tunnel spoil with only concrete roads and the top of one ammunition lift visible. The battery site is located next to the A20 near Lydden Spout Battery. It is one of only two 8 inch coast batteries ever built for the Royal Artillery, the other one being Capel Battery. The guns were high angle and could also be used in an anti-aircraft role.
