Summary

The site of Stagg Point coastal battery, an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. The battery was operational by 1942 and mounted two 6-inch guns. It was manned by 234 Battery of 563 Coast Regiment. The site is currently used as a camp site, although one emplacement, evidence of hutting and remains of a trench system survive.

Full Description

This battery was built to emplace two 6 inch guns with overhead cover, the magazines below ground at the side of each emplacement. The Battery Observation Post is set in the cliff face between the two guns. The domestic camp site was behind the gun emplacements. The site is now a Boy Scout Camp and some remains can be seen of the battery. Guns installed in March 1941, removed around 1944.

No. 1 gun emplacement was located at TR 3790 4810 and No. 2 gun at TR 3790 4825. The Depression Rangefinder was positioned at TR 3790 4820. (2)

Aerial photography from 1978 shows that the site is currently used as a camp site and no features of the battery remain. (3)
