A First World War Redoubt defence earthwork that was first observed in military aerial photography in February 1941 [1] as a faint bank and ditch system just south of the upper road in Swingate east Dover. Later vertical photography in December 1945 [2] illustrated the Redoubt to have been reused as a slit trench system for WWII defence and training purposes covering an area of 170m by 70m. In December 1949 [3] the redoubt/slit trench's was still visible, however in later oblique photography from August 1954 [4] the earthworks appeared to be levelled.
A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
