Full Description

A beacon is shown on William Lambarde's "Carde" of c. 1570 (see Illustration Card) showing 52 beacons in Kent, at "Landesend" on Sheppey (1) and also on a map of c. 1572 (2). [Landesend would seem to be the modern Warden Point (area centred TR 02 72), but there has been considerable coastal erosion since the 16th century.] The beaconsystem dropped out of use after 1640. (1)(2) The site of this beacon was not identified but the name "Warden" undoubtedly confirms the general siting. (3)
