Building record TR 23 NE 213 - Round Down square pillbox

Summary

A Second World War reinforced concrete pillbox of common Dover type- square with overhanging roof slab and two embrasures per side. The pillbox is still extant on aerial photographs taken in 2007, and is located at the cliff edge on Round Down between Folkestone and Dover.

Square pillbox approx 16ft square with overhanging roof slab. Brick-shuttered, 2ft thick walls and 2 embrasures per wall. The type seems to be peculiar to Dover.

Pillbox of common Dover type- square with over hanging roof slab and two embrasures per side. C. 1940. In good condition and built of brick-shuttered concrete. (1)

A circular structure within a square enclosure is shown on the 2nd and 3rd edition OS mapping of the area. It is unclear what this structure was that the square pillbox replaced.
