Building record TQ 77 SE 1268 - Anti-tank pillbox, Berry Court Wood, Cliffe

Summary

A rectangular concrete structure, probably a Second World War anti tank gun emplacement or pillbox, is visible on aerial photographs and has been mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The structure lies near the foot of a north facing slope at the northern edge of Berry Court Wood. The wood was incorporated as an obstruction within the Hoo Stop Line, constructed 1940 across the south western third of the Hoo Peninsula, from the Medway to the Thames, and the anti tank pillbox was another element of the defences associated with the Stop Line. Adjacent defensive features include a second anti tank pillbox immediately to the east, a section of the anti tank ditch, and at least three hexagonal pillboxes.
