Pier utilised during the second world war as an operating base for Royal Naval Auxiliary Patrol (10 vessels each armed with one or two Hotchkiss machine guns). In addition, a number of defensibly equipped merchant ships, each armed with a 12pdr quick firing gun, were also based here.
