Building record TQ 77 SE 1236 - Former Royal Marine Police married quarters

Summary

Nineteenth and twentieth century barracks associated with the Chattenden Magazines. Probably originally built for military personnel, the buildings are identified on OS maps of 1896 and 1909 as Police Barracks. They were manned by the Metropolitan Police until after the First World War, at which time the job of policing the magazines was given to the Royal Marines. The barracks, known as the North Terrace, have been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
