Summary

A Roman cremation burial in a cist was found near Newington in 1867. It was accompanied by a jug or amphora. The finds are in Folkestone Museum.

Full Description

Saltwood. A cinerary urn, 12 inches high, with a saucer serving as a lid, both of course dark ware, and a red earthen jug or amphora which, if one may judge by its neck, is of late Roman date, were found in a stone cist at Saltwood some time before 1874, and are now in Folkestone Town Museum. (1) On exhibition in Folkestone Museum are a cinerary urn and jug (no saucer) from Saltwood Farm, near Newington, 1867, presented by MR H. Rigden. Acc No 180B. (Accompanying sketch shows cist containing burial). (2) Funeral urns from Saltwood exhibited to Society members in July 1874. (3)
