Monument record TR 25 SW 221 - Second World War Type 24 pillbox near Adisham Court, Adisham

This Type 24 pillbox stood near the eastward corner of a triangular, grassy ‘island’, at the junction of three roads in front of Adisham Court. Fire was presumably directed along one of these roads in particular - that extending north-westwards towards a roadblock under the Canterbury to Dover Railway viaduct. Locally the railway formed part of the Dover, Canterbury, Whitstable Stop Line, and the pillbox was evidently part of the stop-line defences. It can be clearly seen in immediate post-war aerial photographs, but no trace survives today. This was pillbox No.113 in the 1940 list of pillboxes in East Kent (2 December); it was in Sector 3 of the 43 Divisional Area, at the stated Military Grid reference R 669724. The likelihood of significant remains seems minimal, although secondary components of the locality, such as excavated defences, may survive archaeologically in the near vicinity. (1-2)
