Full Description

Late in 1942 Canterbury Corporation made a plea for office accommodation in order to provide an alternative control centre in case the existing Municipal Buildings extension should be destroyed. They were offered the lease of the Barcroft Private Hotel on New Dover Road. After brief vacillation towards Combe House, also on New Dover Road, the adopted Barcroft from August 1943. Later that year the Education Committee suggested that the ground floor of the building could be used for teaching retarded children. In mid January 1944 the basement was deemed unacceptable as an air-raid shelter; it had been strengthened with steelwork by mid May.
