Full Description

There seems to have been a Second World War civil-defence depot on the site of the present car park between Pound Lane and St Peter’s Lane, Canterbury. Perhaps due to its size, Canterbury looks to have had two or more Depots for the civil-defence services – the principal one being at Kingsmead; the St Peter’s Lane site looks, initially, to have been of somewhat lesser importance. At the outbreak of war the St Peter’s Lane was Canterbury Corporation’s ‘Central depot.’ It may also have gone under the informal name of ‘Nye’s Yard,’ where some of the Air-Raid Precautions Stores were sited. One component of the depot which may survive is a civil-defence cleansing station (see separate entry).
