Full Description

In late November 1939 ‘two incendiary bomb huts’ were ordered to be built ‘on the vacant land adjoining the Watling Street Car Park’ These were to be used to train civil-defence personnel such as wardens and auxiliary firemen in how to tackle ‘incendiary and high-explosive bombs.’ The tender of Messrs Browning Denne & Co was accepted in late December. In late October 1941 one of these huts was removed from this site ‘adjoining the Municipal Buildings’ which had been requisitioned by the military authorities. It was ordered that it be re-erected on council land in St Peter’s Lane adjoining the existing public air raid shelters there.
