Full Description

Catherine Williamson, Canterbury’s Mayor at the start of the Second World War, arranged, at her own expense, to have a loudspeaker fitted to the High Street frontage of Canterbury’s Guildhall so that she could deliver Air-Raid Precautions advice and instructions directly to the populace. This is shown in a photograph reproduced in ‘The Blitz of Canterbury’ (see sources). It was first used at the time of the evacuation from Dunkirk. The Guildhall was damaged during the War and subsequently, perhaps rather opportunistically, demolished.
