Full Description
At the start of the Second World War, the Simon Langton School was adopted as a reception centre for children and pregnant women evacuated from West Kent. From here they were distributed around the city and the surrounding rural district. ‘To cope with the increased number of meals provided the kitchens were extended and the School [was] used for a time as a Communal Feeding Centre for the City.’ Concrete blocks shielded the external doors of the school buildings from blast. In August 1941 a gas cleansing and decontamination centre opened at the Simon Langton Schools; the women’s section of this station was destroyed at the start of June the following year. By early 1942 a reserve Emergency Hospital had been established at the school, with room for sixty beds.
