Full Description

At the start of the Second World War one of three Auxiliary Fire Service Fire Stations in Canterbury was established at Maltby’s Garage on the New Dover Road. In mid September, a petrol pump and tank here were reserved for Auxiliary Fire Service use. Later a store was constructed, for protective clothing, and a telephone extension provided to a dug-out on the premises. Part of the garage buildings were adapted, and the Emergency Committee ordered that whole of the glass windows and roof should be painted with black-out paint –not just the bit used by the Auxiliary Fire Service.
