Full Description

In late 1941, after the Canterbury Nodal Point had been established, it was observed that the only decontamination laundry available to clean anti-gas clothing within the new defensive perimeter was at the Electricity Works on Kingsmead Road. Treatment tanks were therefore installed in a new building erected outside Williamson’s Tannery (where there was an adequate supply of steam). Tenders were accepted for pipes, steelwork and tanks in mid June 1942. Williamson retained the new building after the war, but it is not clear whether it still survives.
