Full Description
From the outbreak of the Second World War, the new Kent and Canterbury Hospital, which had opened in 1937, was to provide Canterbury’s main Emergency Hospital (with subsidiaries at the St Martin’s Mental Hospital, on the Littlebourne Road, and at the Public Assistance Institution at Nunnery Fields). The gleaming new hospital buildings, of highly distinctive plan, were camouflaged late in 1939. Falling outside the defensive perimeter, the emergency role of the hospital probably diminished or lapsed after the establishment of the Nodal Point/Canterbury Fortress. Medical and nursing staff from the hospital seem instead to have served at ‘nodal point’ hospitals within the bounds.
