Full Description

There was a Second World War Civil Defence warden’s post (Post ‘B/2’) at 20 Cockering Road. This was an ‘advanced post’ (operated continuously and not just on Action Warning). In September 1939 a telephone was provided to the house with an extension to the post, which was in an adjoining dug-out; soon after this, the post is likely to have received additional waterproofing and been supplied with an electric fire. In early September plans were unveiled to supply the post with an air-raid siren; the adjoining neighbour (the house being semi-detached) was worried that this siren, if installed would damage her family’s health. In April 1943 the number of warden’s posts was reduced and this post was renumbered ‘B/1.’
