In early 1941 there was a Second World War Civil Defence warden’s post (Post ‘C/9’) in the garden of 28 Ethelbert Road. The story of this post is extremely convoluted and could do with checking (unfortunately impossible at present). It seems to have moved around, successively, from 67 Cromwell Road to 28 Ethelbert Road, to 8 Ethelbert Road and finally to 25 Cromwell Road. This seems to have been an ordinary (or ‘Action Warning’) post, only manned on Action Warning. At the start of January 1941 there was a scheme to establish a civil-defence rest centre here, but it is not clear whether this was carried through. In mid February, 28 Ethelbert Road was apparently requisitioned by the military and so the warden’s post here could no longer be used. It seems to have transferred to the garage of 8 Ethelbert Road.
