Full Description

There was a Second World War Civil Defence warden’s post (Post ‘A/3’) in the forecourt of what was then the Friars Cinema. This was an ‘advanced post (operated continuously and not just on Action Warning) and as such, it was supplied with electricity in October 1939, made waterproof, and provided with an electric fire. A contributor to the BBC’s ‘People’s War’ Online project, who was a warden at this ‘air raid post just outside the Friar’s Cinema’, remembered ‘two bunk beds in the post’. Around May 1942 a special post was erected here for use under Nodal Point conditions, doubtless of stronger construction. The post was in an ‘underground shelter’. In April 1943 the number of warden’s posts was reduced and this post was renumbered ‘A/2’.
