Summary

Early in the Second World War there was a civil-defence warden’s post in what was described as a ‘Kiosk’ on Longport Street. It seems to have been a fairly rudimentary surface post, purpose-built out of sandbags. In August 1940 the wardens’ service accepted the use, free of charge, of the cellar of a nearby building.

Full Description

Early in the Second World War there was a civil-defence warden’s post (Post ‘C/1’), in what was described as a ‘Kiosk’ on Longport Street. This was an ordinary (or ‘Action Warning’) post, only manned on Action Warning. It seems to have been a fairly rudimentary surface post, purpose-built out of sandbags. In August 1940 the wardens’ service was offered free of charge the use of the cellar of the nearby Bailey House (1 Monastery Road). This was gratefully adopted.
