There was a Second World War Civil Defence warden’s post (Post ‘C/8’) in the garage of the house called ‘Haeremai’ (variously spelt in the wartime documents) on Nunnery Road, at the junction with Nunnery Road. This was an ordinary (or ‘Action Warning’) post, only manned on Action Warning. Sleeping accommodation was provided around the end of December 1940 and the following February, or soon thereafter, concrete blocks were supplied as protection against blast. This post was made redundant in a rearrangement of wardens’ posts around April 1943.
