Full Description

There was a Second World War Civil Defence warden’s post (Post ‘D/7/8’) near the junction of Vauxhall Road and Sturry Road at the waste water treatment works or ‘irrigation farm’. This was an ‘advanced’ post, and as such was manned permanently (other posts were only staffed on ‘Action Warning’). An air-raid siren, which had been purchased for fire alarm purposes at the Public Assistance Institution was instead installed at the post on 6 September 1939. The post was housed in a ‘concrete constructed post’ but this could not be made waterproof and was abandoned due to flooding by late October 1939. On the twentieth of that month Post ‘D/7/8’ moved further out along the Sturry Road, to the Canterbury Gas and Water Company’s Gas Booster Station, taking their siren and telephone with them. The waterlogged shelter was dismantled to be re-erected at North Holmes Road around the middle of 1941.
