Summary

On 20 October 1939, the Canterbury civil-defence warden’s Post at the water treatment works was removed to the Gas Booster Station further out along the Sturry Road. They brought their air-raid siren with them. By March 1943 this post seems to have moved again, to a new, purpose-built concrete surface shelter on the corner of Sturry Road and Reed Avenue.

Full Description

On 20 October 1939, the Canterbury civil-defence warden’s Post ‘D/7/8’ was moved to the Canterbury Gas and Water Company’s Gas Booster Station, from their original post nearer Vauxhall Road, which by now was waterlogged. They brought their air-raid siren and telephone with them. By March 1943 this warden’s post, and siren, seem to have moved yet again, to a new, purpose-built concrete surface shelter on the corner of Sturry Road and Reed Avenue. This was an ‘advanced’ post, and as such was manned permanently (other posts were only staffed on ‘Action Warning’).
