Full Description

By March 1943, the Canterbury civil-defence warden’s Post ‘D/7/8’, which had previously been at Vauxhall Road, and later at the Gas Booster Station on Sturry Road, was moved again, to a new, purpose-built concrete surface shelter on the corner of Sturry Road and Reed Avenue. (Back in September 1939 it had been suggested that another post ‘D/10’ could be moved ‘to the entrance to Reed Avenue opposite the chapel’.) ‘D/7/8’ was an ‘advanced’ post, and as such was manned permanently (other posts were only staffed on ‘Action Warning’), it also operated an air-raid siren. Around April 1943, as part of a rearrangement of Canterbury’s civil-defence wardens posts, this post was renumbered as Post ‘D/1.’
