Full Description
There was a Second World War Civil Defence warden’s post (Post ‘E/2’) on Whitstable Road, in the vicinity of Cherry Garden Road. This was an ‘advanced’ post, and as such was manned permanently (other posts were only staffed on ‘Action Warning’). It was housed in an ‘underground shelter’ (this was probably purpose-built; Canterbury may have been slightly unusual in having such shelters at the start of the war). It was probably supplied with an electric fire, and, if necessary, made waterproof in mid to late October 1939. Around September or October 1942 a new air-raid siren was installed at this post. In April 1943 the Canterbury wardens’ posts were reduced in number and this post was renumbered ‘E/1.’
