Full Description

There was a Second World War Civil Defence warden’s post (Post ‘B/9’) at Worthgate Place. This was an ‘advanced’ post, and as such was manned permanently (other posts were only staffed on ‘Action Warning’). By late October 1941, this was in the Canterbury Gas and Water Company’s employees’ air-raid shelter. It was then ordered that that a new post, sufficient for twelve wardens, be constructed for use under Nodal Point conditions. It was suggested that this be housed in a Nissen-hut air-raid shelter, but this was rejected and ordered that the post be in ‘a surface building constructed in accordance with modern principles to withstand blast.’ In April 1943 the Canterbury wardens’ posts were reduced in number and this post was renumbered ‘B/4.’
