Full Description
Late in 1940 a civil-defence rest centre, for people rendered homeless by enemy action, was established at Beverley House on St Stephen’s Road, with room for sixty persons. An emergency feeding centre was established here the following January, equipped with camp boilers etc.. The rest centre (and possibly the feeding centre) had probably closed by around the middle of that year. A couple of months after the extensive destruction of rest centres occasioned the ‘Baedeker’ raid of 1 June 1942, the rest centre here seems to have been re-established.
