Full Description

In 1939 an ecclesiastical faculty was sought, and granted, to erect an air-raid shelter on the Military Road Burial Ground (it has not been possible to consult this document yet). This was evidently the old Military Cemetery north of St Gregory’s Church. Immediate post-war aerial photographs show a long, narrow concrete(?) structure along the western edge of this site. The shelter does not seem to feature among wartime lists of public shelters - might it have been in military use? Tracks visible on the said photographs seem to lead to several military buildings (now demolished).
