There was a Second-World-War public concrete trench air-raid shelter intended to accommodate 492 persons in the grounds of Woodville Children’s Homes (a building which would see a succession of civil-defence uses during the war). It had been built by November 1939, and may well have replaced unshored or timber-shored trenches. On 4 November it was specified that a fence be erected round the ramps of the trenches at Woodville, subject to the trenches not being obstructed, and that the site of the original trenches be levelled. In late August 1940 Wincheap Farm asked if the door in the back wall of the Homes could be left unlocked to provide a short cut for hop pickers to the shelter.
