Summary

There was a public air-raid shelter in the basement of Swoffer's Fruit Warehouse from the start of the Second World War. It was approved for use in January 1940. A Civil Defence warden’s post seems to have operated at this shelter by mid October 1940. The warehouse was destroyed during an air raid of late January 1944.
