Full Description

This air-raid shelter, in the extensive basement of the Salvation Army Citadel, was in preparation September 1939, expected to hold 250 persons. In the event, however, space was only found for 200. The provision of shelter was approved in early January and the shelter was in use until at least around 1943. The basement has recently been refurbished; it is not known whether any wartime evidence survives. A couple of months after the extensive destruction of rest centres during the ‘Baedeker’ raid of 1 June 1942, a replacement centre was established at what was called the ‘Salvation Army Home, White House (sic) Lane.’
