This air-raid shelter, in the basement of what were Leons’ (costumiers) Premises at 41 High Street, was in preparation by the start of September 1938, to accommodate 50 persons.This provision was approved the following January. The shelter was reinforced, by the insertion of further steelwork, late in May 1942. It remained in use until at least around 1943.
