Full Description
This air-raid shelter, in the basement of Twyman’s premises (carpets, soft furnishings, gents’ outfitters), at the west end of St George’s Place, was in preparation by early September 1939, intended to hold 140 persons. In the event, however, space was only found for 100. The shelter was approved for use in January 1940. Further steelwork was inserted, for reinforcement, late in May 1942. The building has since been demolished (possibly to make way for the present roundabout).
