Full Description

From September 1939 there was a civil-defence warden’s post (Post ‘B/9’, soon afterwards joined by ‘B/10’) at the industrial premises of Schweppes Ltd. (table water manufacturers) on the Sturry Road. The post was provided with a sandbag shelter late in November; this was presumably on the small forecourt fronting the Sturry Road. From late October, the Canterbury Emergency Committee had been negotiating with Schweppes for the use of their cellar as a public air-raid shelter . This was intended, particularly, to provide shelter accommodation for children and helpers ‘at the Schools Canteen, Northgate.’ Its use was agreed around the end of August 1940, and could accommodate one hundred persons. The warden’s post may have moved into the cellar shelter at this time; it was provided with sleeping accommodation around the end of December 1940. Further strengthening steelwork was inserted in the cellar late in May 1942. By April 1943 the cellar could claim to be shored ‘to Code standard’. At this time, in a reorganisation of wardens’ posts in Canterury, the Schweppes post was renumbered ‘D/2’.
