Full Description

In mid November 1939 the Canterbury civil-defence Emergency Committee surveyed the basement of 30 St George’s Place, which the Britannic Assurance Company had offered for use as a public air-raid shelter. No action seems to have been taken however, before August 1940, when the Company renewed their offer. It was then suggested that the basement would provide accommodation for fifty with little alteration. The shelter was duly adopted. Further steelwork was inserted, for reinforcement, late in May 1942.
