Full Description

There is believed to have been a Second World War air-raid shelter under the Friars Cinema (built 1933), on The Friars, Canterbury. The cinema screen is believed to have flashed up air-raid warnings. The cinema survives in good condition, albeit altered to serve as a theatre. (In early October 1939 it had been suggested that Holy Cross School, who had not yet been provided with adequate trenches, use the basement of Friar’s Cinema as a shelter - this seems odd as it would have meant running nearly 500m from the school on St Peter’s Place.)
