Full Description

There was an emergency concrete-trench shelter, intended to accommodate 1155 persons, somewhere in the vicinity of Wincheap Street (possibly the present Recreation Ground?), by late August 1941. This had been proposed as part of a scheme for universal shelter provision in Canterbury, prior to the Nodal Point Conference of 1941. The proposed provision was subsequently ratified (26 June 1941) which suggests it lay within the Nodal Point perimeter – i.e. the Elham Valley Railway locally. It is just possible this might have been the shelter on what would be the Martyr’s Field housing estate?
