Full Description

In mid June 1941 five Nissen huts became available for use as shelters within the Canterbury Nodal Point perimeter. One of these was installed (dug-in and covered with a mound of earth) at the ‘Watling Street Temporary Car Park.’ Thereafter there is a puzzle, since, in mid September that year there is a note to the effect that due to the use of the Watling Street Car Park by the military ‘this Nissen Shelter was available for use elsewhere.’ A site was found in Northgate Street, and the shelter was apparently soon transplanted there. Nevertheless a ‘steel’ Nissen-hut shelter for fifty people, at the Watling Street car Park features in lists of public shelters of early 1942.
