Full Description

In mid June 1941 an additional five Nissen-huts were made available for use in the construction of air-raid shelters. Two of these (or one if there had already been such a shelter here) were placed in the grounds of Canterbury Castle. They were intended, together, to accommodate 100 persons. Construction was probably well under way by late August, when tenders were invited for wiring the shelters. They can be seen clearly on immediate post-war aerial photographs, aligned roughly north-south end-to-end in the castle grounds, by the south-west corner of the Keep. (They coincided with the former line of the castle ditch - the archaeology here has since been observed to be heavily disturbed.)
