Full Description
Following the Nodal Point Conference of May 1941, a number of Nissen-huts were made available for use as air-raid shelters within the defensive perimeter at Canterbury. These were to be dug into the ground and mounded-over with earth, and would each hold fifty persons. Three of these seem to have been allocated to a site adjoining St Peter’s Lane. In mid June some additional shelters became available and one of these, which the Emergency Committee had previously considered placing at St Mary Bredin’s School, was added to the St Peter’s Lane site. In late August, tenders were invited for electrical wiring the new Nissen-hut shelters and here there were two single-hut shelters and one double, providing accommodation for two hundred personas in total. The shelters probably opened soon afterwards. In late October 1941 one of the old civil-defence training huts from the Watling Street Car Par (which had been requisitioned by the Army) was re-erected ‘on council land in St Peter’s Lane’ adjoining these shelters.
