Full Description

In mid September 1941, a steel Nissen-hut public air-raid shelter, intended to accommodate fifty persons, was ‘erected on land at Northgate Street belonging to the Canterbury Lads’ Club.’ The said Club was housed at the Prince of Wales’ Institute on Northgate - a building, since demolished, which saw civil-defence use during the Second World War. The shelter had previously been on the Watling Street Car Park, but could no longer be used because the military had occupied that site. It was therefore transplanted to the end of Northgate, and may well have stood beside an existing communal surface shelters in this vicinity.
