Full Description

In mid 1942 there was a steel Nissen-hut air-raid shelter on Hospital Lane, intended to accommodate 50 persons. It seems to have been placed here at some point after January that year. This can be seen on immediate post-war aerial photographs, aligned parallel to the road under a mound of earth. It stood on the south side of the road, immediately to the east of the Almshouses. Another such shelter may have been brought here, from Burgate, early in 1943.
