Full Description

In mid 1940 it became clear that there was insufficient air-raid shelter accommodation in Canterbury and a scheme was drawn up for eight new communal surface shelters, and to adapt two more cellars. One or both of the latter seem to have been selected and adapted by mid November 1940, on the south-west side of Alma Street. These were described as ‘cellars suitable for communal shelters for all residents of Alma Street’ who lived in very close proximity to the Infantry Barracks.
