Full Description

A timber-lined trench air raid shelter, with room for 220 scholars and staff, had been provided at St Mary Bredin’s School, probably by the start of the Second World War. It was in the playground, apparently at its south-western end. Schooling at St Mary Bredin’s was discontinued in late November 1940, and the shelter was made over to the public. Plans, of June 1941, to place an additional Nissen-hut shelter here, to house fifty shelterers, seem to have fallen through, and the hut allocated to the group at St Peter’s Lane. (1)
